And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased” – Hebrews 13:16

There are many verses in the Bible where God calls His people to care for those in their time of need.

This is just one of the teachings that jump to mind when St Andrew’s Gardiner Uniting Church reflect on their commitment to Food For Families.

The congregation, formerly known as Mulgrave Uniting Church – Indonesian Congregation, has collected food and non-perishable items for Uniting’s Food For Families program since 2018.

“Our congregation has been overwhelmingly supportive of the program,” shared Alfian.

“The majority of our community are young families with small kids who understand the ups and downs of raising a family, especially during Covid years. Some community members have even shared their own personal struggles affording food and living costs.”

St Andrew’s Gardiner Uniting Church had previously supported a similar initiative, donating food to families in Indonesia. Members decided that participating in Food For Families would be a great way to connect with their local community in Australia and support those facing hardship closer to home.

Each year the congregation collect around 10 to 15 boxes (over 30 shopping bags) of non-perishable food and essential household items.

“Participating in this program aligns with the core principles of compassion, empathy, and service that are central to my faith,” said Albert.

“It reflects the belief of caring for others and practicing kindness towards those in need, which are fundamental teachings in many theological traditions.”

“It is important for us to share our blessings to others. It is a chance to put words into action, even if it’s just a small one,” added Ing.

For the church, donating to Food For Families is a practical way of providing support to those experiencing crisis. To help people put a meal on the table and feel hopeful about the future.

“This work resonates with me because it addresses a fundamental human need: access to food. Food insecurity affects individuals and families from all walks of life, and by supporting this cause, I can directly impact the well-being of my neighbours and community members,” shared Albert.

“Knowing that I can play a part in providing nourishment and support to those facing hunger makes this cause particularly compelling to me.”

St Andrew’s Gardiner Uniting Church are passionate about continuing their commitment to Uniting’s Food For Families program and encourage other congregations to participate.

“It really is a beautiful, heart-warming program. It brings people closer together. We hope our contribution supports people in crisis when they need it most,” said Alfian.
